At the sixth UniSerV User Group (UUG) meeting in Birmingham recently, CAM committed further major investment over the next 18 months to ensure commercial service providers maximise their efficiencies and gain incremental business opportunities presented through its new fleet management enhancements and system reporting tools as well as benefit from the increasingly fertile area of business intelligence (BI).

The meeting, chaired by Anne Sherwood of Tructyre, was attended by UniSerV customers Aone, Dexel, Horndean Tyres, Lodge Tyre, Micheldever Protyre, Watling Tyres, Tyrenet, Tyrework and Universal & Autocentres.

Anne Sherwood said, “CAM has pledged further investment to take system and data connectivity to the next level, enabling greater efficiencies to be introduced and more business to be generated.  The proliferation of BI means data will be able to be shared amongst the enlightened UUG participants so that they are more than competitive in the areas of fleet customer acquisition and retention over their non e-jobsheet enabled competitors.  We’re very excited to be part of this next phase in CAM’s technology development.”

Kate Neill, UniSerV product manager for CAM, commented, “The UUG meetings have become an insightful, thought-leading forum for UniSerV customers to debate key issues and challenges, and become beneficiaries of the latest technological developments to be introduced by CAM.  Together, we are pioneering the way for best practice and for new business opportunities to be forged for the good of the industry.”

Hankook Tire is one of the main sponsors of the UEFA Europa League for the 5th season, and also presenter of the Man of the Match trophy. Mr Ho-Youl Pae, COO of Hankook Tire Europe, proudly handed over the trophy to Manchester United midfielder, Ander Herrera.

After losing the final four years ago with his previous club the Manchester United ‘player of the year’ seized control from the beginning and stymied Ajax's flow. Herrera dedicated his trophy to the victims of Monday’s terror attack in Manchester.

"The technical observer group chose Ander Herrera as man of the match for his drive and sharpness, his quality in and out of possession and his spirit and willingness to sacrifice himself for the team," said Ioan Lupescu, UEFA managing director for technical development.

"We are very happy. It’s not every day you win the European trophy!” summarised Ander Herrera after the match. “We know we could have done better in the Premier League, so to finish the season with three titles is fantastic; it was the game of the season.”

Hankook has been an official partner of the UEFA Europa League, the largest cup competition for club teams in Europe since 2012. In addition to football sponsorships of Real Madrid CF and Borussia Dortmund, Hankook also supports many international motorsport racing series. Amongst others, for many years the company has been the exclusive and successful supplier of tyres for DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) and for the 24-hour series.

Goodyear has signed a three-year deal to become title sponsor and tyre supplier of the British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC).  High performance from the tyres is essential as they are a key component to the BTRC racing trucks.  Goodyear has developed new technologies and innovations to ensure the best performance possible for the Truck Racing tyres.

Testing was completed throughout the development of these tyres.  Racing trucks and their drivers were regularly given the opportunity to push the tyres to their limit on test tracks in Luxembourg and France.  The tests took place on a variety of track surfaces and in both wet and dry conditions to ensure the tyres could provide optimal performance in all environments.

Fast forward to 2017 and development of the Truck Racing tyres is still ongoing.  The latest generation of Goodyear 315/70R22.5 truck tyre carcasses are still being used, but now developments are focused on reducing overheating and increasing lateral rigidity to enhance performance further.  Additionally, a special tread compound and tread design are used to improve ground contact.  The tyres also contain another innovation; Radio Frequency Identity (RFID) in which a microchip is built into the tyre to provide a unique electronic identification.

Bandvulc initially introduced its special fleet management process for one of its rental fleet clients in order to stringently focus on costs.  The difficulties particularly experienced by such operators include additional work being carried out without authorisation and difficulties in recharging the work to its customers.

The benefit that Bandvulc’s specialist service brings is the ability to track the work through to completion for the customer, ensuring that only the work authorised at the time of the call is paid for (with no exceptions!) and closing down the job.  Whilst this involves greater administration for BVPlus+ the benefit to the hirer is that costs are known in advance and recharges can be processed upfront thus increasing revenue.  BVPlus+’s role includes monitoring the service provider’s ETA and completion time to ensure the customer is being charged correctly.  In February of this year this facility was rolled out to the majority of BVPlus+’s rental/contract fleets.

The team managing this area of operations has been formed from a group of technically aware, experienced members of BVPlus+ including ex-tyre fitters.  They are able to assess situations in depth and have the authority to take suitable action based on achieving the best outcome for the customer in terms of costs, expediency and timesaving.  They can decide whether work recommended by the fitter needs to be done right away or can be arranged to be done back at the depot avoiding additional roadside/call out charges.

After a thorough tender process, Shanks Waste Management Ltd has selected Vacu-Lug Traction Tyres Ltd to manage its commercial vehicles and mobile plant and machinery tyres for a number of recycling centres throughout the UK.

Using Vacu-Lug’s bespoke web-based VMS software programme, each Shanks vehicle is individually managed to provide a full monitoring, repair and tyre husbandry service. This includes Shanks’ entire fleet of delivery and collection vehicles, including roll-on-roll-off hook-lifts with drawbar trailers and a mixture of plant and OTR wheeled equipment.

“During several months of stringent evaluation,” says Shanks’ UK Plant and Vehicles Manager, Chris Byrne. “Vacu-Lug came out best for service level agreements and overall value. Now, after the first 3-month review, I’m pleased to say our ongoing objective to reduce vehicle downtime has been achieved and we expect to maintain exceptional response and repair times going forward.”

“The VMS fleet management solution from Vacu-Lug,” adds Chris, “includes the provision of high quality new and retread tyres and helps to ensure full compliance with Shanks tyre policies and the law. Furthermore, through ongoing analysis of tyre data via the VMS web portal, we can identify any potential high-cost areas while keeping a close eye on vehicle budgets.

“So far,” concludes Chris Byrne, “Vacu-Lug’s tyre fleet management service has achieved all that it set out to do: close tyre monitoring, fast response times and consistent first-time repairs – all of which go a long way to keeping VOR times as low as possible.”

Paper and corrugated packaging producer DS Smith is rolling out Michelin solutions’ trailer telematics programme across its entire 207-strong fleet, after reporting zero trailer tyre-related breakdowns during a 40-unit, six-month pilot project.

The EFFITRAILER telematics units are being fitted to 207 single-deck SDC Trailers curtain-siders as factory-fit original equipment, and delivered as part of a rolling 18-month fleet renewal.

Mark Abbey, General Manager, UK Logistics at DS Smith, says: “During the six-month pilot EFFITRAILER flagged up 22 potential trailer tyre-related issues, all of which we could rectify quickly. This helped us maximise fleet uptime and keep to our delivery schedule without fail.

“We’ve also improved efficiency across the pilot fleet thanks to the programme’s schedule-tracking tools, which keep a close eye on the location of our trailers when they’re sitting at mills and recycling partners, and alert us to under-utilised assets. In fact, we’re so confident in its efficiency-boosting abilities that once every trailer is fitted with EFFITRAILER telematics, we might even reduce the fleet by up to 10 trailers.”

ATS Euromaster, the tyre and vehicle maintenance specialist, has received the Gold Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for the fourth year running.

The award follows ATS Euromaster’s introduction of additional programmes to consolidate its industry health and safety record.

As the first national tyre and vehicle maintenance provider to hold the RoSPA Gold Award, the repeat receipt of the accolade means ATS Euromaster’s commitment to safer working environments remains unmatched in the sector.

Winning a RoSPA Gold Award requires a demonstration that the business has improved its health and safety practices from the previous year. During 2016, ATS Euromaster introduced its ‘Think safe: Home safe’ programme, which emphasises how health and safety regulations protect the lives of colleagues and customers.

The 13,500-strong dairy farmer cooperative will continue to benefit from Bridgestone’s premium tyre range and holistic Total Tyre Care offering, with a renewed deal now in place up until 2020. Arla’s Inbound Logistics Director, Richard Wilson, said: “We have been really impressed with Bridgestone on a number of levels for some time now, so the decision to extend our agreement was an easy one for us to make.

“Not only are the products extremely reliable an impressive from a performance point of view, but the levels of aftercare and associated services are also right up there.”

Award-winning engine detox company E EDT will support Asthma UK by promoting its logo on literature and will also be making a donation for every EDT treatment completed after 1st June.

“Supporting Asthma UK is a great fit for us,” said David Holmes, Managing Director at EDT Automotive. “Vehicle emissions can negatively impact air quality and are strongly linked to asthma whilst our engine detox and cleaning treatment can help to lessen the problem.”

EDT says the new partnership offers the fast-growing business a welcome opportunity to give something back. The charity will also be supported by EDT’s partner garages – not only to help further raise the charity’s profile but also in opting to make an extra donation they will fund themselves.

Asthma UK works to stop asthma attacks and aims to ultimately cure the condition through support to sufferers and funding for research. Every ten seconds someone in the UK has a potentially life-threatening asthma attack and three people die every day. The charity says two thirds of these deaths could be prevented, yet some suffer with symptoms so severe that current treatments aren’t effective.

Michelin is set to unveil its wireless tyre pressure management system at Automechanika Birmingham between June 6 and June 8.

The user-friendly accessory, which is being distributed by Fit2Go, can be installed in under three minutes - helping to give motorists maximum performance, safety and fuel efficiency with the minimum of fuss.

The valve-mounted part of the Michelin Tyre Pressure Management System weighs just 8g and it transmits pressure and temperature data to a small, windscreen-mounted sensor.

The solar-powered sensor flashes and emits an alarm if pressure is incorrect or if temperatures are too high.

A seperate pressure checker is also supplied, and contactless technology means tyre pressure can be measured accurately without havuing to unscrew dirty valve caps.

Every UK public sector ambulance service now fits Michelin tyres on a first-choice policy, with the premium tyres delivering long lasting performance and maximum safety for the lifesaving ‘blue light’ services, whilst helping to deliver better value for the taxpayer.

All 10 NHS ambulance services in England have signed a first-choice policy, alongside those of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – each agreed under the Crown Commercial Service (CCS) Supply and Fit Tyres framework.

The Crown Commercial Service supports public bodies, including the emergency services, to save money and achieve commercial benefits, including on tyre purchases and fitting.

Jonathan Layton, Michelin’s head of fleet, says: “By fitting Michelin, ambulance services are benefiting from tyres which deliver the optimum blend of performance over a long life, reducing fleet operating costs and the downtime associated with tyre replacement. Plus, Michelin tyres provide excellent safety and mobility year-round – a factor appreciated by ambulance crews, especially during the winter months.

“We’re very proud to be first-choice fitment – and to know our tyres are helping save lives around the country every single day.”

  • Yokohama-sponsored Chelsea FC lift the Premier League trophy
  • Club’s first league title since premium tyre manufacturer Yokohama became their official shirt partner
  • Chelsea play Arsenal in the FA Cup final season finale this weekend

Following their 5-1 win in yesterday’s top versus bottom clash against Sunderland, Chelsea FC lifted the Premier League trophy in front of a packed crowd of 42,000 at Stamford Bridge.

The win made Chelsea the first club to secure 30 top-flight victories in a 38-game season and gave them their fifth Premier League title, the first since Yokohama tyres became their official shirt partner in 2015.

“It’s been a fantastic year for both Chelsea and Yokohama and we’d like to pass on our congratulations to the team on their magnificent achievements over the course of the season,” comments David Seward, managing director, Yokohama HPT Ltd.

Despite the league season drawing to a close, Chelsea have one more domestic fixture remaining in this weekend’s FA Cup final at Wembley against north-London rivals Arsenal.

After just a few weeks rest, the team will return to action in their pre-season tour of the Far East which kicks-off in Beijing against Arsenal on 22nd July. The team will then move on to Singapore with games against Bayern Munich and Inter Milan on 25th and 29th July respectively.

Bridgestone’s presence at the CV Show has been heralded as an ‘emphatic’ success, after showcasing its range of premium services to hundreds of businesses, whilst also concluding a prestigious fleet agreement during event itself.

The company’s newly developed M-STEER 001, M-DRIVE 001 and M-TRAILER 001 tyres were showcased, with both new and retreaded patterns generating a great deal of interest. This newest line-up of On/Off tyres have the durability to perform in a wide variety of surface conditions from asphalt and gravel to sand and mud, while demonstrating a high resistance to cutting, chipping and other forms of accidental damage.

The M-SERIES, which also delivers excellent mileage as well as great traction and grip, was especially significant at the NEC, as they played an instrumental role in the conclusion of a fleet agreement with Arla Foods. The 13,500-strong dairy farmer cooperative will continue to benefit from the range of tyres and holistic Total Tyre Care offering, with a renewed deal now in place up until 2020.

What may presently be the world’s fastest fully-electric racing car will shortly make its debut at the Zandvoort motorsport circuit in Holland, shod with Kumho tyres. During the track’s annual Pinksterraces meeting (June 3-4), the young Dutch racing team InMotion, that primarily comprises students from Eindhoven University of Technology and Fontys University of Applied Sciences, will attempt to break the circuit’ s existing electric car record of 2:04.52 minutes. However, the general public will have the opportunity to preview InMotion and its IM/e at the same circuit during this weekend’s (May 20-21) annual Family Days. The team will be in good company, as the main attraction of the event will be none other than the Dutch F1 sensation Max Verstappen and his Red Bull Grand Prix car.

Based on their previous Formula Bio bio-ethanol racecar, InMotion’s IM/e features a powertrain consisting of a pair of high power electric motors that generate a mighty impressive 550bhp, while retaining the car’s total weight as low as 650kg. Of higher specification than a Formula E single-seater, it will sprint from 0-100kph within 3 seconds and reach speeds of up to 280kph. However, this is only stage one for the young entrepreneurs, as it will serve as a test-bed for their forthcoming IM01 - an 1100-plus horsepower hybrid sports racing car with which they hope to break Stefan Bellof’s outright record of 6:11.13 minutes for the 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife, before competing in the Garage 56 class of the legendary Le Mans 24 Hour race – the class reserved for vehicles of technical innovation. This spectacular racing car of the future is intended to outperform a current F1 car while consuming less than half the amount of fuel.

Automechanika Birmingham in partnership with Garage Wire has announced the shortlist of garages in the running to win the £1000 cash prize for Garage of the Year. The judging panel, James Onions, Andy Savva and Simon Albert will announce the winner on Wednesday 7th June in the Workshop Training Zone at 1.00pm at Automechanika Birmingham, NEC.

As a new initiative, the organisers were overwhelmed by the number of entries from garages and the judging panel has finalised a shortlist of 13 workshops who will go head to head for a peer vote. “The standard of entries was incredibly high as the applications showed the huge variety of garage businesses operating successfully throughout the UK by tailoring their services to meet local demand,” said James Onions, Director of Garage Wire. “However, some clear common themes emerged amongst entrants too. These included first, an entrepreneurial flair to adapt to changing car and consumer technologies; second, willingness to invest – typically in premises, skills development and equipment then finally, heart-felt commitment to customer service and transparency. Thanks to all who entered and good luck to the finalists!”

Two years ago in Italy, Davanti came into the market with a small, but targeted range of PCR and SUV tyres in their DX390 and DX640 patterns. Since then, Davanti has risen to prominence in the UK & Irish markets as evidenced by their scale of developments thanks to their ambitious growth plans.

Fast forward two years and the brand now boasts over 200 summer sizes across 6 individual patterns including PCR, UHP, commercial, SUV and taxi. Sean Maddocks, Davanti Sales Director to the UK & Ireland says, “We’re all looking forward to heading back to Bologna and further developing our European customer base. We’ve brought a fantastic range of products to market and our dealers across the UK & Ireland have embraced them from day one, and we’re getting great feedback from our European distribution partners too.”

At this year’s Autopromotec event, Davanti will be launching its Wintoura range of winter tyres, which is the latest offering to the brand’s ever growing customer base, both in the UK and the global market. The Wintoura range, which has been tested and developed at Test World Oy in Finland, is being launched in 51 fitments across the HP, UHP, SUV and Commercial sectors.

Michelin is rejecting calls from parts of the tyre industry to increase the minimum legal tread depth from 1.6mm to 3mm.

The manufacturer says there is no link between tread depths at 1.6mm and increasing accident rates. In addition, changing tyres at 3mm would cost the motorist money and increase carbon emissions - especially as a tyre becomes more fuel-efficient as it wears.

An Ernst & Young report commissioned by Michelin found that changing tyres at 3mm instead of 1.6mm would cost European Union drivers an extra E6.9 billion a year in unnecessary tyre purchases and additional fuel consumption.

Instead, Michelin is calling for a change to the tyre testing regime to reflect wet braking performance at 1.6mm.

For this year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours, Falken Motorsports will field a two-car team for the first time: a Porsche 911 GT3 R (Type 991) and a BMW M6 GT3. An internal battle between the two has ensued, with Falken driver and ‘Nürburgring expert’, Peter Dumbreck, opting to switch to the M6. The Banbury-based driver discusses the unique challenges of the race, his move from the Porsche to the BMW, how tyres compare on the two and his aims for the race.

How has progress been in testing this year?

With two cars we’ve had a different approach for each car. The Porsche is a continuation from the end of last year and as we are better acquainted with it, it’s been a natural progression from last year. At this year’s VLN it came out of the blocks and was fighting for victory straight away. So from that side the Porsche is doing very well. The BMW is a new car to us and we are all still learning, both drivers and tyre engineers.

At Portimão, where we shook down the cars, and at the first VLN race the conditions were pretty wet, so we had no dry running at all really. You get a pretty good sense of where you are after 20 laps of wet running. The first two VLN races are a good test to fix where you want to go on setup and tyres and our engineers really value that track time ahead of the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

The one unknown, which is the same in every form of motorsport, is the BOP [Balance of Performance], I’d say the dreaded BOP. Only at the 24-hour race will you really see what the pace is like and how all the manufacturers are performing.

It is now just over four months (19 weeks) until the UK tyre and automotive/garage market sectors finally has its own dedicated trade show again and the interest from potential exhibitors and visitors continues to gather momentum.

When Singapore based SingEx Exhibitions hosts Tyrexpo UK 2017 at the NEC in Birmingham – Hall 17 on the 4th and 5th October it will be a most welcome return as it is several years since the UK tyre industry players have been able to enjoy an internationally respected business show on its own doorstep. At the same time the show is expected to attract interested visitors from Europe and possibly around the world.

Whilst the now established Tyretalk seminars will consist of expertly curated presentation sessions over both days and Singex is at present in negotiation with a number of enterprising and respected ‘leaders of the tyre and automotive/garage industry’s’ to speak on specialized subjects of interest.

There are also sponsorship deals on offer for Carrier Bags, Official Lanyard and Badge and Onsite Advertising to take advantage of. A standard exhibition stand shell scheme package includes fascia board with company name, spotlight, power socket, a cabinet, round meeting table and chairs and each stand is carpeted. To receive further information about Tyrexpo UK/ GarageXpo UK 2017 and request an exhibitor participation package contact Leah Jurado at leah.jurado@singex.com or Jermaine Tan at Jermaine.tan@singex.com.

Having finished a fine third overall on the previous weekend’s British Rally Championship Pirelli Rally in Carlisle, the pairing of Marty McCormack and David Moynihan were hopeful of a strong result on last weekend’s (May 13) Donegal Forestry Rally. And their wish was well and truly granted, with a memorable outright victory by the sizeable margin of over 1 minute 10 seconds for their TigerRisk Kumho-shod Skoda Fabia R5.

The victory leaves the duo joint fourth in the Irish Forest Rally Championship with three rounds to go, and just a handful of points away from the podium places of the British Rally Championship.

Steve Thompson of Kumho Motorsport said: “This was a truly dominant drive by Marty who made mincemeat of the tricky 17km stage through Tullnacarry, taking no less than 25 seconds out of his nearest rival. We wish him all the best with the coming rounds of both championships, as he is clearly in the groove right now.”

A solid step in Doublestar’s aspirations to strengthen its position in the global tyre industry has taken place with the formation of a new operational joint venture in partnership with the Zenises Group. The new company, Doublestar Europe, will be responsible for the sale, marketing and distribution of Doublestar commercial and passenger tyres in key European territories (including Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom).

Doublestar is already one of China’s ‘Top 5’ leading tyre manufacturers with a track record of strong growth. Most recently, the establishment of its new ‘4.0’ industry leading production plant in Qingdao allows the company to increase its European footprint with regard to both volume capacity and new product development.

For the Zenises Group, this new JV relationship represents a powerful opportunity to build on its longstanding presence in the European tyre arena and offer commercial partners the opportunity to work with one of the world’s most forward- thinking tyre providers. The Doublestar brand has already built widespread recognition in the commercial tyre segment. It is also now the intention of the new Doublestar Europe company to grow the brand in the high performance passenger tyre segment, building on these technological advancements made by the company over recent years.

The new Doublestar Europe venture will be established in London (U.K.) with its own dedicated support and business development team.

GT Radial unveiled its three-year development programme at its annual PCR European Marketing Council, with Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) praising the clearly defined future direction of the brand.

Held in Austria, over 27 customers from across the continent attended the event which looked at the current state-of-the-market, future trends, product development and marketing direction, which included the brand proposition across advertising, point-of-sale and online activities across website and social media.

Guest speakers included Dr Klemens Skibicki, a renowned professor in social media and digital marketing, and MTS who presented in-depth details of the UK’s GT Radial Performance Centre (GPTC) programme plus information on their B2B2C Tyreclick solution for GT Radial dealers.

Duncan Wilkes, managing director of MTS, said: “The aim of the event was to convey a single message to all its customers across Europe that GT Radial has a past and a future that remains clearly defined across both OEM and the aftermarket, and this was delivered with aplomb.

“There is no doubt that the UK and European markets are becoming more challenging, so a quality product range with a clear message and brand position is essential, and GT Radial continues to heavily invest in its marketing and R&D to ensure it stays ahead of the game. This was an exceptional event.”

The retreading specialist has optimised its product range again this year in response to customer demand from several quarters. The core range has been streamlined to cater more specifically to the needs of the retreaders as some tread lengths have been discontinued and others added.

There are new additions in the 10-metre length, for example, in both the K77 range in the K_plus version and in the K208 range in the K_base and K_plus designs. KRAIBURG Austria has also completed its successful K227 product range to include 260, 270 and 280mm so it is now available in all widths and in the K_base and the K_plus compounds.

"The new layout and clear structure of our pattern programme went down very well with our customers last year," said Christoph Priewasser, Product Manager at KRAIBURG Austria. "Our new naming system established a foothold from day one as well. We are doing all we can to supply naturally high-quality retreading materials again this year and to provide the optimum basis for business operations."

Further information and the current pattern programme are available to download at www.kraiburg-austria.com.

Autopromotec is one of the most important automotive exhibitions in Europe that enables manufacturers to present their products and meet their clients in an international environment. For this 27th edition, Headway are exhibiting the new Horizon HU901, one of its most successful tyres. It features an asymmetric tread design that effectively improves water drainage and increases tyre adhesion to the road, providing better performance in safety and driving. With a central main rib design that increases stability when driving straight and effectively reduces tyre resistance on the road, this tyre provides a significant improvement of the vehicle’s starting speed. The Horizon HU901 will be displayed at the E20 stand in Hall 15.

Headway’s participation in Autopromotec will also increase the company’s visibility in Europe, because in the end, Headway has a headquarters in Italy, Germany, France, and Spain, which places it in a very good position to sell and distribute its products around Europe. So its presence at the fair is even more advantageous, given that it’s one of the few manufacturers that sell their products to tyre shops directly through their webshops.

New research from Dragon2000, reveals that if garages and workshops increase their efficiency by just one hour per day, at an average labour rate of £70 per hour, it could result in £18,200 of extra labour sales per year.

A garage or workshop with five technicians, who each increases their efficiency by one hour a day, can head towards making extra annual labour sales of almost £100,000.

Mark Kelland, Commercial Manager at Dragon2000 comments: “The new Technician Scheduler shows capacity levels at a glance and will also suggest suitable technicians to assign labour to, depending on their pre-set skill sets. As well as MOTs and standard service work, it is ideal for managing long-term jobs.

“The feature also accommodates shift patterns and allows for apprentice technicians to have a lower efficiency rate, so they are allowed extra time, as they would take longer to carry out work than experienced technicians.

DragonDMS users can find out more about the Technician Scheduler and all the other features in the latest update via the ‘What’s New’ icon within the software.
