Hankook Tyre UK was presenting their expanding portfolio of commercial vehicle tyres at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham.

Taking place at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), the launch of the tyre manufacturer's new all-season trailer tyre SmartFlex TH31 was displayed in size 385/65 R22.5.

Alongside this new addition to the SmartFlex range, the existing SmartWork series that has been selected as Original Equipment for MAN, Mercedes-Benz Truck and Scania vehicles was on the stand as well. 

The for long-distance SmartTouring AL22 coach tyre was shown for the very first time on the UK market, which had been a product premiere at the Commercial Vehicle Show 2016.

As part of their fundraising efforts for Red Nose Day 2017, Grouptyre member Kenway Tyres held a raffle for their customers to win “Olly the Orang-utan”.

Trade customers from all over the northern parts of Scotland as well as customers in Kenway’s own retail outlets bought tickets for a chance to win the giant cuddly.  Kenway’s fantastic fundraising efforts raised over £2700 for worthwhile charitable causes.

The lucky winner was Mike Murray at MMC Motors in Peterculter, Aberdeenshire.

GSF Car Parts’ latest ‘Here Comes Summer’ holiday promotion winner is Brookfield Garage, located just a couple miles away from their busy Bristol Central branch.

It’s capped a productive promotion for the successful independent. They added the main prize of £5,000 in holiday vouchers to £1,500 of Love 2 Shop vouchers already awarded for reaching their top level target in each of the first three months of 2017.

Bristol Central Branch Manager Danny Collins said: “It means a lot to us that they’ve won this. 

“As a branch we’ve been absolutely flying, March was our best ever month and it’s down to the hard work of the team of 24 staff.”

The owners were clearly surprised – but were certain on what they’d do. “We’ll share it with the guys at the garage,” said Pete. “We tend to pool prizes; it’s down to their hard work at the end of the day.”

Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) has thrown its weight behind a cross-industry campaign to encourage a government rethink on proposed changes to current MOT legislation. It is also calling on all involved in the tyre industry to make their voices heard via an official petition.

MTS, the UK’s second largest distributor of tyres, is backing the ProMOTe campaign, which has been re-established in response to the government’s plan to extend the time allowed before the first MOT of a car or motorcycle’s life from three years to four.

The wholesaler is also appealing to all involved with the tyre trade who are opposed to the proposals to register their concern via the official petition. The petition was registered by Euro Car Parts, in collaboration with the IAAF, and aims to gather enough signatures to trigger an official government response.

The ProMOTe campaign has been established in response to the Government’s plan to consider reducing the frequency of MOT tests. ProMOTe is a broad-based coalition representing road safety groups, motoring organisations and industry bodies all opposed to what are dangerous, expensive and unwanted plans.

Despite Brexit, new EU data protection legislation is being introduced in May 2018 and if garages and workshops are not compliant, they could face fines of up to 4% of their turnover.

The new legislation will affect the way garages and workshops collect and use individuals’ personal data.  Individuals are going to be given more protection under the new EU legislation GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) which will replace the Data Protection Act 1998.

These new GDPR guidelines will strengthen individual’s data protection rights compared with the current legislation covering personal data.  Consent, profiling, transparency and administrative fines will all be up for public consultation ahead of the regulations being finalised and published.

Mark Kelland, Commercial Manager at Dragon2000 comments: “Garages and workshops need to be aware of the changes to data protection and should start putting in place the new measures that will be come into effect next year. One major change is a ban of the use of pre-ticked opt-in boxes for marketing purposes, which means failure to opt out will not constitute consent.  Garages and workshops will need to keep clear records to demonstrate individuals’ consent. 

European transport specialist De Rijke Northern Europe B.V. has appointed Michelin solutions to manage the tyres across a fleet of 160 tractor units and 660 trailers based in The Netherlands, Belgium and UK for the next three years, following a competitive tender which pitched the Michelin brand against several premium competitors.

The EFFITIRES™ contract – Michelin solutions’ name for a bespoke tyre management policy – marks the company’s third successive retention of the contract since De Rijke first outsourced its tyre management in 2007. It also extends De Rijke’s history of fitting Michelin tyres to more than half a century.

Under the new deal, Michelin solutions will manage approximately 4,000 tyres fitted to De Rijke’s Northern Europe fleets, with the contract structured to maximise compliance, safety, uptime and fuel efficiency.

Jeroen De Rijke, Chief Procurement Officer and joint owner, says: “It’s essential to have good tyres as we can’t afford problems on the road. We’ve built our business around delivering on time, and the whole Michelin solutions team supports us in achieving this promise. Service levels are consistently high, and it shows in the results we achieve together.”

A new golf event, to be known as the NTDA 2017 Tyre Industry Golf Day, is being organised by an illustrious group of NTDA Honorary Life Members namely John Tarbox, Martin Rowlands and George Forbes, will take place at Mere Golf and Country Club, near Manchester, on Thursday June 1st 2017.

The 18 hole, 6,882 -yard, par-71 course at The Mere was designed by James Braid, and created out of 150 acres of Cheshire parkland in 1934. Today, the Championship course holds the reputation as one of the best maintained and highest quality golf courses in the North of England.

Often referred to as the ‘Wentworth of the North’, the course is surrounded by mature trees, flowering banks and has stunning views over the Mere Lake. Due to its success during the first Automechanika Birmingham in 2016, original equipment (OE) manufacturer and systems supplier, HELLA, is back again this June with a stand almost twice the size of last year’s.

WENZEL Industrie, part of the Marangoni Group, has been honoured with an award at Jungheinrich’s annual Supplier Day.

The Lilienthal-based industrial tyre specialist is responsible for the sales of industrial tyres in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark and won the ‘Best Supplier 2016’ award.

The award was received by Wilhelm M. Wendel, General Manager of WENZEL Industrie GmbH. “The superior teamwork of all Marangoni areas was the main reason the supply chain process was optimized, thereby ensuring 100% adherence to delivery dates for Jungheinrich AG, together with the high product quality of the Marangoni industrial tyres,” he said.

Both criteria were cited in support of the award win. Wenzel Industrie is part of Marangoni Industrial Tyres S.r.l, the solid tyres expert, which supplies the industry globally from its factories in Italy and Sri Lanka.

At Automechanika Birmingham, emissions system specialist TPCATS will exhibit the latest additions to its full range of aftermarket Catalytic Converters, DPFs and front pipes.

These include its brand new DPFs for Euro V Ford vehicles – with which TPCATS becomes the first non-OE manufacturer to reach the market.

TPCATS Sales Director, Mike Flower said: “High quality components and manufacture have always been the hallmarks of our range and the increased scrutiny of the Euro V test enables us to demonstrate those capabilities.

“We are proud to be the first aftermarket manufacturer to come through the Euro V DPF testing procedure which together with measuring the effectiveness of the Catalyst also tests the DPF’s filter. The Type Approval test measures the performance of the DPF in normal operating conditions and regeneration scenarios, along with testing back pressures to ensure no impact on engine performance.

Leading wheel servicing equipment specialist, Pro-Align, will launch two brand new systems at this year’s Automechanika show in Birmingham, helping workshops to improve both their customer service levels and operational efficiency.

The new Hunter Road Force Elite (RFE) wheel balancer is the next step in Hunter’s advanced wheel balancing technology, designed to eliminate even the most challenging of wheel vibration issues. Peter Tillotson, business development manager at tyre pressure monitoring specialist, TyrePal, discusses the importance of tyre safety for emergency service vehicles.

Emergency service vehicles must be maintained in good condition to safely and quickly carry personnel and life-saving equipment to the scene of the accident without delays.

Since 2014, all new passenger vehicles sold in the EU must have tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) fitted as standard. However, there are no specific laws or regulations for tyre pressure monitoring systems in emergency service vehicles, including fire engines and ambulances, despite the importance of safe operation and driving.

A lack of legislation means that it is the responsibility of each emergency service to ensure its vehicles’ tyres are properly maintained. One way of doing this is by using TPMS to constantly monitor tyre pressure to recognise tyre problems early. The system's in-cab monitor can alert the driver of any potential problems, such as underinflation or overheating before an incident occurs.  

If a problem is not identified early enough it can result in a blowout. This is when all the air is released immediately due to a catastrophic collapse of the tyres integrity, potentially causing the car to swerve into another lane of traffic.

The Ron Haslam Race School has launched the season with a new tyre partner; Dunlop Tyres. Dunlop’s RoadSmart III tyres will now be fitted to the fleet of Honda’s used by the race school to provide an ultimate level of grip and performance at their track days running at the famous Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire.

Positioned as a sports touring tyre the RoadSmart III will provide a wide range of performance criteria to the riders using the school’s fleet. The tyre has been designed for demanding riders with the objective of being best in class for handling and grip whilst also achieving the highest levels of durability in the sector, which are all important criteria for a fleet of bikes at a professional race school such as Ron Haslam.

TyreSafe’s tyre safety awareness message to check tyres before travelling this Easter is being featured in a national advertising campaign from Highways England and THINK!

TyreSafe has campaigned for ten years to raise the awareness of the importance of correct tyre maintenance and the dangers of defective and illegal tyres, working closely with key road safety stakeholders including Highways England. The national advertising over Easter will help reinforce TyreSafe’s ongoing road safety initiatives and spread the message to check tyres before a long journey to an even broader audience.

Half of all breakdowns attended by Highways England are caused by simple mechanical problems which could be avoided with simple checks. Nearly a quarter are caused by tyre problems. However, breakdowns are not the only concern - tyres account for 40% of fatal or serious injuries caused by vehicle defect-related incidents.


Goodyear has announced that its Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV, Ultra-High Performance tyre, has been chosen as original equipment on the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the first SUV from the iconic Italian manufacturer. 

Matching Alfa Romeo’s tradition of ground-breaking design and state of the art technology, the Stelvio will be fitted with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV in sizes 235/65R17 104W, 235/60R18 103W and 235/55R19 101Y.

All the tyres will be marked ‘AR’ to indicate they are approved by Alfa Romeo as original equipment on their vehicles.

 "The fact that Alfa Romeo has chosen Goodyear as original equipment for its first SUV confirms our expertise in designing tailor-made tyres for car manufacturers’ new flagship vehicles," said Nick Harley, Goodyear’s Managing Director OE Consumer EMEA. "To meet the requirements for this eagerly awaited car, we had to deliver a tyre that enables the Stelvio driver to appreciate the benefits of a SUV, as well as to fully enjoy the Alfa Romeo spirit.”


Currently being rolled out across the global markets in which Banner Batteries operates, the labels incorporate a new design element in the shape of a differentiation in space. Whilst continuing to rely heavily on Banner’s ongoing adoption of the colour red and its now familiar brand ambassador, the buffalo, the labelling now centres on the inclusion of the colours black, silver and gold.

The Board of Directors of the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association met today for the first of its two annual meetings.

Amongst the several topics discussed in order to set the medium to long term priorities for the activities of the Association, particular attention was paid to the EU environmental agenda related to tyres and rubber products. This covers several aspects of the industry’s operation: from product inception to production, from the use phase to end of life.

In this context, the decarbonisation of transport remains high on the agenda of ETRMA. The European tyre industry has taken a proactive approach and is engaged in reducing CO2 emissions through new and advanced tyre technologies whilst promoting road safety and other regulatory measures, such as the tyre label. The Board confirms its support to the efforts of the European Commission to reduce Heavy Duty Vehicle CO2 emissions. The Board also confirms the continued efforts of the European tyre industry to improve the tyre rolling resistance coefficient by 1% on average per annum, which would result, by 2030, in a further reduction of 8.7 million tons of CO2, corresponding to removing emission equivalent of 81,000 40 ton-trucks every year from the European roads.

“The Board meeting of today confirms the commitment of the tyre and rubber industry to sustainability, not just through its focus on environmental issues – some of which are mentioned above, but also looking at other important aspects such as the future of road transport, REACH refit, toxic-free secondary raw materials and drinking water legislation, just to mention a few,” concluded Mrs Cinaralp, Secretary General of ETRMA.

The Honourable Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban formally inaugurated Apollo Tyres’ 6th global tyre manufacturing unit and the second one in Europe last week. Present, on the occasion were Peter Szijjarto, Hungarian Foreign Affairs & Trade Minister, HE Rahul Chhabra, Ambassador of India to Hungary, Onkar S Kanwar, Chairman, Neeraj Kanwar, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Apollo Tyres. The company’s Board of Directors and its senior management team was also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion Onkar S Kanwar, Chairman, Apollo Tyres said, “With this inauguration today, of our Hungary greenfield facility, we have crossed another milestone in our global growth journey. This facility will help us further increase our presence and market share in Europe. From being a replacement market focussed company in Europe, we would soon be starting supplies of our tyres to all the leading OEs in Europe.”

Located less than 100 km from the capital Budapest, this is Apollo Tyres’ first greenfield facility outside India. This is a reflection of company’s growth aspirations and manufacturing capabilities, showcasing some of the best practices available across the globe in tyre manufacturing. A highly automated plant with use of IT-driven systems and robotics, it employs young and skilled associates on the shop floor, mostly hired locally.

It is now three years since the UK tyre market hosted its own show but the long wait is now over as Tyrexpo UK 2017 (including GarageXpo UK 2017) will be opening its doors for the very first time on the 4th October for what promises to be a unique and high professional two day event.

Tyrexpo UK 2017 which will be staged at the NEC in Birmingham – Hall 7 with around 3,500 sq metres of floor-space will be hosted by SingEx Exhibitions of Singapore and becomes the very latest show to form part of its’ event formulas of tyre and automotive related exhibitions. SingEx currently stages ongoing bi-annual tyre shows in Singapore and Johannesburg, South Africa along with yearly events in India (Delhi and Chennai) and the company is now turning its specialist attention on the UK market.

Northampton Saints recently teamed up with their elite sponsor, Hankook Tyre UK for the 2017 Hankook Power Lap Challenge. In an event exclusive to social media competition winners, 80 members of the public gained elite access to the Franklin’s Gardens Sturtridge Suite to meet their favourite players. As guests collected autographs and photos, the players competed head-to-head for the fastest lap on Forza 6.

Cheered on by the crowd and ‘Bernie’, the Saints mascot, the fierce competition culminated in a ‘battle of brothers’ final, with Saints prop Alex Waller eventually taking the crown. Four lucky golden ticket holders were also called up to compete; with 14 year old George Funnell claiming victory and taking home the team’s signed Xbox One.

The Saints’ global fans, from as far as Washington DC, cheered on as the races were streamed live on Facebook. The evening was also filmed by the players, footage of which can be seen on Hankook Tyre UK Facebook page as well as on their website www.hankooktire.com/uk.

Celebrating its successful English football club sponsorships, Avon Tyres has created and held its first Avon Tyres Mascot Challenge, pitting Derby County’s Rammie, Swindon Town’s Rockin Robin and Bristol Rovers’ Captain Gas against each other in a series of fun physical tests featuring Avon tyres.

The mascots dribbled footballs around stacks of tyres, carried footballs through a tyre slalom, rolled tyres to the goal line, and then attempted to get into the driving seat of an Avon liveried Audi R8 with each mascot squeezing themselves in and closing the door within a set time.

Derby County’s Rammie, the first full-time mascot in British football, clinched victory following intense competition in the final round of the four-round challenge.
