Retailing review from Reading ... Page 1
This month's retailing report focuses upon Reading in Berkshire and all depots visited are judged out of a maximum of five points for each of the 10 sections.
Our mystery customer asked for prices for a 185/55R 15 82H tyre to fit at 2004 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2.
Each depot is scored on a number of areas of professionalism and accompanied by a general brief summary of each individual visit. |
| ATS Euromaster, Basingstoke Road |
This depot had a good distinctive exterior presentation with bright, clear signage and there was no problem with access. Parking facilities were also of an acceptable standard.
I was immediately acknowledged on entering the premises by one of four guys standing within the reception area who were all dressed reasonably smart. The guy serving me was polite but not that enthusiastic and really just appeared to go through the motions of serving just another customer without any real interest.
Having delivered my enquiry I was given the choice of two tyres - a Michelin at £89.99 and a Continental at £80.99. When I asked if he had anything cheaper I was informed that he did not have a budget brand in stock in an H rating only in a V rating. On being asked if it was okay to mix a V rated tyre with three H rated ones, he said, “Yes, it's okay but you would need to buy two at the back. However, there is a possibility that the car may then fail the MOT.” In other words he didn't really know and his three mates didn't offer any support either.
The customer waiting area and reception were in an average condition and this was a fairly average visit let down by lack of knowledge. I would probably buy tyres from this depot if the price was right. |

The exterior was in an average condition with the signage looking a little tired and shabby. However, access was good and parking facilities were adequate and backed-up by additional space opposite at a mini retail park opposite.
When I entered the reception area, which was in reasonably good condition, no staff were there to greet me. I noticed two guys in the workshop who spotted me but made no attempt to come and help. Eventually another staff member came through and asked if he could help.
This guy was helpful and friendly and offered a Firestone at £78.50, a Continental at £89.50 and a Michelin for £104.50 stating that they were the only tyres he had in H rated. He then said, “If you really want a budget brand then I could get in a V rated one for £60.50.” However he admitted that he wasn't sure if fitting a V rated tyre was permissible for the MOT. He also pointed out that if I got a better price for a similar tyre anywhere else in Reading then to return to the depot and he would match that price.
Taking everything into consideration this was an acceptable visit that was only slightly tarnished by a failing in acknowledging a customer and depending on price I would consider buying tyres here |
