Walmart Leading the Way
“There is a wider view, predominantly from America, concerning an alternative aspect of involvement and control in the life cycle of waste tyres from shred through to new products. Walmart in the USA are leading the way by compacting waste tyres and sending them to shredders where they are re-processed back onto the shelves as recycled products thus creating maximum efficiency and reduced costs.
The Forum was opened by President, Roger Hicks and Secretary General, Peter Taylor who informed their guests that the aim of the Forum was to discuss and respond to what is happening in tyre recycling with the intention of moving in the same positive direction in future as a professional and responsible organisation.
Peter Taylor stated, “The services offered by the TRA have come a long way and the Association is something all members can be proud of. However, it is our intention to further refine our activities in the future.”
There was a number of guest speakers including Bill Warnett from Excelar Limited who announced a new TRA audit and compliance regime. Fran Lowe from the Environment Agency and Ian Hoult, Environmental Services Manager (enforcement) explained how the EA is working towards catching criminals and what the tyre industry can do to combat tyre crime. Fran, who is Waste Project Manager, explained that since imposing the landfill ban the EA has been tracking tyre incidents to ensure that the market has responded satisfactorily to the directive and feedback suggests that the landfill ban has had a significant effect on tyre dumping. He said, “It seems that whilst smaller tyre dumping incidents are increasing, larger incidents have become less frequent. What is also very important is that the EA has found no evidence of any organised crime involving tyres.
“What the EA is looking for from the TRA and its members is any information that will help the agency continue to monitor the situation in the future.”
New TRA Certificate
The next pair of guest speakers were Ryan Mifflin and Barry Stocker from the newly formed TRA Marketing Group who introduced the new TRA Certificate and explained what it is and how to obtain it, as well as its value to retailers. Barry pointed out that this new certificate can help retailers explain to their customers why they are paying a charge for the disposal of their discarded tyres.
Ryan stated, “The TRA Marketing Group will act as an effective contact point with the media on future TRA activities and developments. Our clear primary objective is to raise awareness of the TRA to not only the tyre industry but also the general public.”
David White, Customer Services Director for Kwik-Fit GB Limited then took charge of the microphone to give a very honest and interesting viewpoint from a tyre retailer on tyre collection and re-processing. After outlining the significant merits that Kwik-Fit GB look for in a tyre collector, including a willingness to share the company's interest and enthusiasm in IT technology, David turned his attention to innovation and pointed out, “We are definitely looking to take full advantage of opportunities that allow us to implement other roles that will effectively help our overall operation.
